Frequently Asked Questions

Does psychotherapy work? Will I benefit from it?

Psychotherapy works. It is important to know that it is not a magical solution. Psychotherapy is a process in which the client and the therapist move forward to achieving your objectives. The more we advance, the better you will feel and the symptoms that originally brought you to therapy will improve, as well as your ability to deal with them. In this process you will notice your own growth, and discover your own resources as you learn from yourself.

Psychotherapy is similar to learning a discipline such martial arts or yoga. It requires an effort from who practices it. It is not like taking analgesic medication, nor receiving a massage. In order to maximize the benefits and advance with good pace, the client and the therapist need to be committed and work willingly. The more we both put into the process, the better and faster the results.

How many sessions will I need?

The length of the process will depend on your motivations, expectations and in what you want to get from the therapy. We will both discuss about the planned length of the process as well as the frequency and we’ll work towards your improvement in the planned time.

Therapeutic processes focused on deepening the understanding of your own character, growth and development, or focused into changing relational dynamics and patterns that have been acquired throughout your life are usually longer. They typically require months or years of work in order to develop permanent changes. On the other hand, those processes focused to solve a given situation like a phobia, anxiety, relationship brake-ups, integrating intense experience and similar processes can be dealt with shorter time, and we’ll work to asses them with 10 to 15 sessions.

In any case, it is important to me that you feel comfortable with the format and the length of the process. So we can periodically talk about how you feel in relation to your process, and discuss the improvements, the frequency and the general development of the process.

How are the sessions? Will I have to lay in a divan and talk about my infancy?

In the kind of psychotherapy I practice the divan is not used. There is a comfortable couch in the office though, and you can use it to be as cozzy as you want. Sessions will last for 50 to 60 minutes, and during this time you can talk about what you feel like. We will explore what you explain to move towards the achievement of the demand you brought to therapy. It is also likely that we’ll do some exercises during the session, so therapy is more profound and useful, so it is not only about talking. You will be the one leading the process and its pace, you won’t have to talk about anything you don’t want to, you are the expert of your own experience and my role is to accompany you at the rhythm you feel comfortable.

Usually I ask for some tasks to be completed in-between sessions. These tasks are aimed to give continuity to your therapeutic process, to make you more involved with it and to save time and resources. These tasks will allow us to explore more thoroughly your problem, and they will help is advance towards the solution, so they are an important part of the therapy.
